He is an Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld in London. His writing has appeared in Artforum, Art Monthly, Apollo, Burlington Contemporary, Texte zur Kunst, The Art Newspaper, The Burlington Magazine, Art History, The Toe Rag and elsewhere. Matthew has previously held editorial, research and curatorial positions at the Modern Art Press, Burlington Magazine, Henry Moore Foundation and the Frank Bowling Studio and has worked with international museums and galleries including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Hauser & Wirth, among others. He is a PhD candidate in the History of Art department at the Courtauld. Focused on work by Paul Thek, John Outterbridge, and Nicola L., his doctoral research examines how their practices upend and expose extant masculinist and heteronormative historiographies of post-war American sculpture, both demanding and producing a revision of sixties sculpture through the lens of racial inequality, feminism and queer studies. He has previously given talks at the University of Cambridge and at the Courtauld.
